The Relationship Curse: How I became a Football Fanatic

It's inevitable that when you spend as much time together as couples do, you tend to adopt each others hobbies. In my case, I seem to have fallen (or been forced) into most of my hubbies. For some reason, "Hey honey, want to help me pick out some makeup?" just doesn't sound like a good time to my husband. While my hubby occasionally will shop with me and he does enjoy a good bake-off, for the most part when we spend time together it's listening to music or watching sports. Let me tell you how my husband's hobby became my obsession...

When we first started dating, and even in the early parts of our marriage, my husband always spent Thursday, Sundays and Mondays glued in front of the television watching football. From September to February he'd sit yelling at rival teams and cheering every measly catch his team produced (he's a Raiders fan haha!) while I sat reading my Kindle, lovingly by his side. For those first few years I got through more novels than an English major and in between sentences I'd make small talk about who did what and what a great play that was.

My husband then started getting really into Fantasy Football. The first year he played he had one league, which turned into two, five, and then suddenly ten. Around this same time he kept begging me to play in a league with him. Finally, being the sweet and loving (eyes may roll right about here) wife I am I agreed. Now I'm not a competitive person in the least and I tend to shy away from any sort of competition, but like most people out there I like to win. After I realized Fantasy Football was half strategy, I started taking note. Being a person who loves to research things, I began reading up on all the different teams, players and general football news I could find.

I became a woman obsessed, I new every injury, every trade and every "breakout" star there was and I even strutted around the house in my cute little football jersey thinking I was the best wife. Sundays would roll around, I'd bring out the array of snacks, we'd sit down to watch a game and while spitting out fact after fact about players from each team... my husband inevitable told me I really needed to stop talking because he was, in fact, trying to watch the game. Here I thought this is what people did who loved football! According to my husband, people who love football pick a team, hope they win and snack on junk "because it's football season."

Still, whenever it comes time to pick a fantasy team, my hubby doesn't mind asking for my seemingly vast wealth of (pretty useless) football knowledge. Let's just say this year, I have three fantasy leagues...

For all of you who are as obsessed with football as we are in my house, YAY for the season starting tonight!

Have any of you ever fallen into the hobby of your partner (and maybe even surpassed their passion for it)?

  4. Haha I'm completely with you when you talk about getting through tons of books while they do their thing ! I spend way to much time reading while my boyfriend does whatever he does when he looks all focused at his laptop trying to do some technical thing that I'll never understand hehe :) But it's brilliant you and your husband can share that hobby now ! My boyfriend keeps saying he's going to teach me to skateboard but he stood me on his board and I just off screaming " It moved ! You didn't say it would move ! I nearly died ! " ... maybe that hobby isn't for me ;)

    lots of love, Marianne xxx
